Kathy Schlepp was raised on a ranch in Powder River County. She attended one-room schools through the 4th grade, and then attended Ashland Public School. She and her brother then moved to Miles City for their secondary education. Kathy has a Bachelor and Master's Degree in nutrition from Montana State University. After completing a dietetic internship at the VA Medical Center in Houston, she was self-employed as a consulting dietitian for several years covering southeastern Montana nursing homes and hospitals. Kathy has worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs since 1976.

Kathy's husband Verne is a math teacher at Custer County District High School. They live in Miles City and have three married children and two grandchildren. She loves the wide-open spaces of eastern Montana. She also relishes the volunteer work she now has time for since her children are grown, especially with the Custer County Arts and Heritage Center and their local Hospice program.
