Youpa Stein

Youpa Stein, M.A., R.D.T., is a native Montanan. She has a BFA in acting and directing from the University of Montana. Her theater experience includes touring with the Montana Repertory Theater Company as a student, a three-year tour in Montana of a one woman play “Planting in the Dust” through AERO and Montana Committee for the Humanities (now Humanities Montana) and directing plays including the world premier of “Place Where Bear Dances” and four of Moira Keefe’s autobiographical shows.

Youpa graduated with an MA in Psychology and Drama Therapy from the California Institute of Integral Studies and is a Registered Drama Therapist. She is a founder and the director of Living Art of Montana, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in Missoula. Youpa has facilitated Living Art programs since 1993. She is particularly interested in the use of expressive arts and nature-based experiences as vital ways for people to process, explore, integrate and find new perspectives and avenues for growth. She has worked primarily with people who face life-altering or life-threatening conditions and illnesses.

Youpa is co-authoring a Living Art book with Beth Ferris, MFA titled “You Can Write Your Way Through This: A Story in Poetry” and working on a series of masks made with bark. She lives in the forested hillsides of the Jocko Valley with her artist husband, Karl, and her son, Kai.
