We're heading into the season of winter, when dusk descends early and darkness lasts longest. There are many ways the world can seem dark to us. We seek that tiny candle, the light in the window, the moment of grace, the warmth of laughter, the glow of wisdom.
Art brings light into our world. In ways literal and metaphoric, art gathers us together around the campfire of our shared humanity.
How does art bring light into your world? Tell us a story about how art is the light in the darkness—for you, for your community, for a day or a moment, or for your shared world.
A few prompts:
Has hearing the right song at the right time ever saved your life?
What's the most meaningful experience you've had viewing a work of art in a museum?
Have you ever astonished yourself with art you've made?
What book, film, music, or experience makes you feel most alive?
Send us 100 words or less about how art is the light in the darkness for you. A photo with a caption. A drawing, a painting, a poem. This winter, we’ll gather the stories together and share as many as we can in the pages of State of the Arts and on our social media channels—to celebrate the tiny lights across Montana that bring illumination and hope to us all.
All ages welcome to participate. Your submission must include permission to publish in print, online, and in social media. Artist retains copyright ownership.
